Madrid is the capital of Spain, sometimes called Villa y Corte (town and court). With a population of approximately 3 million, it is the largest city in Spain and the third largest in the European Union.
As administrative capital, Madrid is the seat of the government, the courts, and the main civil service establishments and state institutions and organisations. It is also the site of the official residence of the Spanish royal family.
The city is an important financial, industrial and cultural centre. Here you will find the head offices of many national companies and of some of the largest transnational corporations in the world. The international headquarters of the World Tourism Organisation are in Madrid and the city organises the FITUR fair, which is the most important international fair in the tourism sector. Madrid is an influential national cultural centre and also contains internationally recognised museums such as the Prado museum and art gallery, the Thyssen-Bornemisza art museum and the Reina Sofía contemporary art museum.
In 2006 Madrid was the fourth most visited city in Europe and the first in Spain, with almost seven million tourists.

ÁVILA: Sta Teresa de Jesús, a great mystic woman of the Catholic Church, was born in this city which conserves the most ancient and complete fortified complex in Spain (XI century).
SEGOVIA: The roman empire left in Segovia the Acueduct, which is 16 km long. It was residence of some of the kings of Castilia and preserves one of the most important medieval group of buildings in Spain.

The beautiful imperial city-museum of Toledo is located 70km away from Madrid. It is one of the oldest towns in Europe, called “city of the three cultures”, since Christians, Muslims and Jews lived together. Its genuine Spanish buildings include almost all the periods in the history (Arab, Gothic, Mudejar, Renaissance and Baroque style). Here lived the great painter El Greco in the XVI century.
