Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is the second Spanish city in terms of population and the tenth in the European Union. It has hosted various world events, such as the Universal Exhibitions of 1888 and 1929 and the Summer Olympic Games of 1992, and these have helped to shape the city and make it known all over the world.
Barcelona has a great variety of places to visit, from the Roman ruins and the medieval city to the Catalan modernist neighbourhoods with their characteristic buildings arranged in square blocks with cut-away corners, and their tree-lined streets and broad avenues. The city’s outstanding artists include Picasso, Dalí and Gaudí.
As Barcelona is on the coast it enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm summers. It has more than four kilometres of urban beaches and some large wooded areas. The inhabitants of Barcelona speak Catalan, their own language, and Spanish.
